BLM Artist in Residence Program
2024 Artist in Residence: Suzanne Jackson
We are excited to announce Suzanne Jackson of Basalt, CO, as the 2024 Canyon Country Artist in Residence. From October 8–29, Suzanne will explore the awe-inspiring landscapes of the Canyon Country District, channeling her experiences into plein air paintings and sketches. With a background in landscape design and experience with public land agencies like the National Forest Service, Suzanne brings a wealth of knowledge and passion for the outdoors. An avid hiker and river adventurer, she has explored the wilderness from Alaska to the Grand Canyon, and now, she will focus her artistic eye on the dramatic beauty of Utah’s Canyon Country.
Suzanne hopes to capture the “magical connection between people and nature,” using her sketching and watercolor talents to bring the landscapes of the Colorado Plateau to life.
Sego Canyon Rock Imagery and Sketching Trip
Saturday, October 19
8 am – 1 pm
Join Moab BLM, CNHA, and this year’s Moab Artist in Residence, Suzanne Jackson, for a half-day excursion to Sego Canyon Rock Art Site!
Participants will listen to a short presentation about the cultural history of Sego Canyon followed by an activity led by Suzanne.
Due to the location and nature of the activities, group size is limited to 20 participants. Participants must be prepared to shuttle in their own vehicles from a nearby location TBD as there is limited parking at Sego Canyon. Watercolors, colored pencils, and paper will be provided, but if you have your own art supplies you’d like to bring, please do so. Children 12+ are welcome to participate, and dogs on leashes are also welcome.
Physical Requirements: This will be 100% outside with limited seating. Walking isn’t required, but participants may choose to walk along the walls to view the imagery (under .10 of a mile). Participants could be subject to adverse weather conditions such as rain, wind, and heat. Bring plenty of water, a lunch, sun protection and layers. A camp chair is recommended if you wish to be seated as there is only one picnic table. A vault toilet will be available and there is little to no cell service at this location. Once you’ve signed up, please wait for a confirmation email from Eran Howarth (BLM) with the time and location of a predetermined carpooling location.
